Getting started on your ABA JOURNEY

What you need to consider and the steps to take

1. Research

Research within the field of ABA to see how it all works, and what a quality ABA program includes. Familiarise yourself with the background of ABA and the methods that are used, this will help you understand the basics.

2. Online courses

There are many ABA training courses you can undertake online, many parents complete such courses. These courses are to help you familiarise and learn the foundations of ABA, which will help you support your child within their therapy and also be involved on a regular basis.  Parents involvement is key to any successful ABA program.

3. Find an BCBA/ABA Consultant

Research and speak to a range of BCBA's/consultants and see which will suit your child's individual needs.  Your BCBA/consultant will arrange to assess your child and then set up a workshop (see services we provide for more details of our workshops). They will design and oversee your child’s program on a monthly basis.

4. Find Behavioural Therapists

Along with your family taking an active role in delivering your child's ABA program, you may wish to find tutors to also join the team. It is vital that if you are looking to hire tutors, that you check tutors have: DBS checks, insurance, qualifications held and also that you source out their references.  I also recommend families have tutors that have joined the UKSBA and hold an RBT qualification. Please see our "meet the team" section for a list of our Behavioural Therapists currently available.

5. Resources

You will need a variety of resources to start your child's ABA program. These resources are anything from reinforcers, toys and individual program items (flashcards etc.) You will also need a small table and chair, and quiet area where your child's therapy can take place. Your BCBA/ABA consultant will give you a list of items you will need once an assessment has taken place and your child's program has been created.

As stated previously, parents involvement is key to any successful ABA program. Parents involvement can be from delivering therapy on a daily basis, to preparing materials and resources etc. The level of dedication parents and family actively take will bring great value to the quality of your child's ABA program.
